Alan Cumming set for Macheath on Broadway

NEW YORK, March 1 (UPI) -- Scottish actor Alan Cumming has been cast as "Mack the Knife" Macheath in a Broadway "Threepenny Opera" revival scheduled to open next year.

Producers of the revival of the Bertolt Brecht-Kurt Weill musical said Tuesday the production will be directed by Scott Elliott, who directed the current Broadway hit revival of "Hurlyburly."

Playing opposite Cumming will be Edie Falco, a former star of TV's "The Sopranos," as Jenny Diver. Nellie McKay, a pop star, will appear as Polly Peacham.

Cumming played the Berlin nightclub emcee in "Cabaret" in its hit Roundabout Theater Company revival at Studio 54 several seasons ago, establishing himself as a Broadway leading man.

The revival of "Threepenny Opera," its first since the 1989 production starring Sting as Macheath, also is scheduled for Studio 54.
