Americans pick 'Ray,' 'Aviator' for Oscar

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Feb. 23 (UPI) -- "Ray" edges out "The Aviator" as the public's choice for the best picture Oscar, while Jamie Foxx leads for best actor, a Harris Poll indicated Wednesday.

According to the poll, nearly a third of respondents said Foxx should win an Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the leading film, "Ray." He is trailed by Clint Eastwood for his role in "Million Dollar Baby" and Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes in "The Aviator."

Hillary Swank led the field of best actress nominees with one-third of respondents voting for her role as a down-and-out fighter in "Million Dollar Baby," but one out of five respondents said they weren't sure who should win the award.

"Ray" led "The Aviator" slightly, 23 percent to 21 percent, followed by "Million Dollar Baby," "Finding Neverland" and the indy hit "Sideways."

The winners of the Academy Awards will be announced Sunday during a televised event hosted by comedian Chris Rock.

The survey's findings were based on a telephone poll of 1,012 adults conducted Feb. 8-13. It has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
