Las Vegas gets Broadway show lineup

LAS VEGAS, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- The musical hit "Hairspray" will open late this year at the Luxor Las Vegas Hotel, bringing the number of Broadway shows in the city to four.

The producers of "Hairspray" announced Wednesday they have signed a multiyear agreement with the Luxor for a shortened, no intermission version of the show for the hotel's 1,500-seat theater. It will run 90 minutes, compared to two hours and a half on Broadway, and there will be 10 performances a week as opposed to eight on Broadway.

"More than 15,000 people will be able to see the show every week," said Marc Routh, a "Hairspray" producer. "We think it extends the brand and just makes the show more famous. And the more people that know about the show, the more people will want to see it."

Another Broadway musical, "Mamma Mia!," with music by Abba, has been playing to capacity audiences at the Mandalay Bay for the past year. "Avenue Q," an Off-Broadway show that became a Broadway hit, will open at the new Wynn Las Vegas in September, and "The Phantom of the Opera" is scheduled to open at the Venetian early in 2006.
