Actor Cliff Curtis crashes car into house

OTAKI, New Zealand, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Actor Cliff Curtis reportedly was checking a cell phone text message when he drove off a New Zealand road and struck a house.

The Hollywood actor was en route Monday to the "River Queen" film set in Wanganui when the accident occurred near Otaki, leaving Curtis sore and limping, The Dominion Post reported Tuesday.

Curtis' 4-wheel drive vehicle smashed through a fence, then careened through the living room window of a house just moments after the actor briefly looked down to check a text message.

"Next thing I know I was climbing out of the car and I was in someone's lounge. ... I was completely distraught when I got out of the car. I was scared that I had hurt someone," Curtis said.

Homeowner Christine Powell was in the next room when the crash happened.

"If anyone had been in the room they would not have survived. But you have to laugh - it's the first time a Hollywood star has come calling on me and it certainly was a dramatic entry," Powell said.

Charges have not been filed, though the cell phone use is being investigated, the Dominion Post said.
