NEW YORK, June 23 (UPI) -- Author Olivia Goldsmith died from anesthesia complications during surgery at a New York hospital cited for health code violations, it was reported.

An autopsy on the "First Wives Club" author found her Jan. 15 death was caused by "cardiorespiratory arrest during facial cosmetic surgery under sedation" with four different drugs, said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the New York Medical Examiner's Office, the New York Post said.

Goldsmith, 54, was undergoing a chin tuck Jan. 7 at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital when she went into distress, and fell into a coma. She died eight days later at Lenox Hill Hospital.

In February, Susan Malitz, 56, went into cardiac arrest and died while undergoing a face lift at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat.

The New York Health Department has fined the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital $20,000 for health rule violations in both cases, including failure to effectively respond when the patients began having problems, the Post said.

"The First Wives Club" was made into a movie starring Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton and Bette Midler.
