Kevin Smith: Mewes kicked drug habit

NEW YORK, March 8 (UPI) -- Jason Mewes, who played New Jersey stoner Jay in five Kevin Smith films, has kicked his well-publicized heroin addiction in real life.

"Mewes is doing great," Smith told reporters Saturday, revealing his long-time friend will have an acting role in his upcoming film "The Green Hornet."

"Coming up on April 6, it will be one year of total sobriety, which is shocking," Smith said. "It is kind of a sign of the apocalypse that that dude could clean up. But he's been doing fantastic. He did six months of court-mandated rehab and that made all the difference and he's been living with me for the past five months and it just seems to be over at this point, where he just seems to be like, 'Obviously, what I was doing wasn't working and I don't want to be that guy anymore.'"

Smith, who has played Mewes' sidekick Silent Bob in his comedies "Clerks," "Chasing Amy," "Mallrats," "Dogma" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" will not appear in the "Green Hornet," however.

"Oh, (expletive), no," he told UPI. "I'm done acting. I realized I shouldn't really be in front of the camera. I should barely be in back of it, but I definitely shouldn't be in front of it."
