Hitler painting withdrawn in Tokyo

TOKYO, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Tokyo officials have vetoed plans by Toshiba Entertainment to display a painting by Adolf Hitler during the showing of the movie "Max."

Representing the distributor, they fear displaying the painting could spark an international outcry, reports Mainichi Daily News. They have already been inundated with inquiries from the media, including foreign news agencies.

A Toshiba Entertainment official said although the company had received no outright criticism over the plan, "repercussions could be beyond our expectations".

The painting is a watercolor of a Vienna church. Hitler was interested in becoming an artist before he failed art school entrance examinations. Most of the 2000 paintings he allegedly created were unknown until recently.

"Max" is the story of a fictional art dealer who becomes acquainted with Hitler in Munich before Hitler entered politics. The film has not been shown in Germany because of strong opposition to it.
