Play centers on activist James Baldwin

EVANSTON, Ill., Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A single performance of a one-man play about the life of writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin will be held Feb. 6 at Northwestern University.

Tony Award-nominated actor Calvin Levels wrote the script and will star in "James Baldwin: Down from the Mountaintop" about the Harlem native who was a minister by the age of 14, lived in Paris for a decade and returned to the United States to build friendships and rivalries with the likes of Martin Luther King Jr., Richard Wright, Marlon Brando, Truman Capote and Malcolm X.

After graduating from high school, he worked as a journalist writing for The Nation, Commentary and Partisan Review. His first novel, "Go Tell It on the Mountain," was based on his experiences as a teenage minister in Harlem.

Levels has worked with theaters across the country, including the Ensemble Studio Theatre, Lincoln Center Theatre and the Music Box Theatre on Broadway. He received the Theatre World Award for Outstanding New Talent and was nominated for the New York Drama Desk Award.

Tickets to the show at Mussetter-Struble Theatre at Northwestern University are free, but must be reserved in advance.
