Belafonte, others cited at Harlem awards

NEW YORK, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Singer Harry Belafonte, blues belter Ruth Brown and salsa legend Johnny Pacheco were among those honored in Harlem Wednesday.

The occasion was the third annual National Black Sports and Entertainment Hall of Fame Gala.

"To be in Harlem and to be recognized for what I've accomplished -- especially the positive things -- is strictly wonderful," said boxer Tommy "Hitman" Hearns, one of the inductees.

Also inducted into the Hall of Fame was the late Branch Rickey, who integrated major league baseball in 1947 when he put Jackie Robinson on the Brooklyn Dodgers' roster.

The shindig, billed as the "Hats Off to Harlem's Finest" gala, was co-sponsored by The New York Post, its parent company, News Corp.; the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and WNBC/Channel 4.
