HOLLYWOOD, July 22 (UPI) -- Director Oliver Stone has cast Angelina Jolie in his epic "Alexander," as Olympias, the Macedonian conqueror's mother.
Jolie joins Colin Farrell as Alexander and Anthony Hopkins, as Ptolemy, in the Intermedia-financed film.
Jolie will play Alexander's mother from his childhood through his reign as the king. Jolie will shoot her scenes in Morocco and London in the fall, Daily Variety reported.
The role of Phillip, Alexander's father, has yet to be cast.
"Alexander" goes head-to-head with the unnamed Alexander the Great project being directed by Baz Luhrmann, who is producing it with Dino de Laurentiis. That Universal/DreamWorks picture will star Leonardo DiCaprio as Alexander and Nicole Kidman as Olympias.
Jolie's latest effort opens Friday in Paramount's sequel "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life."
She is currently filming WB's D.J. Caruso-directed "Taking Lives," starring Ethan Hawke, and just wrapped up "The World of Tomorrow" with Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow.
