Fox News, Brokow win Nielsen ratings

NEW YORK, July 2 (UPI) -- The Fox News Channel commands essentially half of the cable news viewers while NBC's "Nightly News with Tom Brokaw" surged ahead of the competiton.

Fox News dominated across the board, increasing its total average audience by 94 percent over the same quarter last year, according to Nielsen Media Research. It also boasted four of the top five cable shows.

In June, Fox News was the only network to post increases across its primetime lineup, despite wartime audiences having subsided. Competitors CNN and MSNBC posted across-the-board losses over the same time period last year, Daily Variety reports.

Brokow posted the best margin of victory over ABC's "World News Tonight with Peter Jennings" in at least 16 years.

Meanwhile, No. 3 network newscast, "CBS Evening News With Dan Rather," posted what's believed to be the smallest audience on record at 6.48 million, Nielsen said.

The Nielsen quarterly ratings included the last few weeks of the war.
