UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A top U.N. official in New York Friday called on the international community to commit support to global peacekeeping operations.
Alain Le Roy, U.N. undersecretary-general for peacekeeping operations, addressed the U.N. Security Council Friday and said there is a growing demand for soldiers needed for peacekeeping operations around the world. Le Roy called on the international community to fill the gaps in desperate situations like in the Darfur region of Sudan, the United Nations reported.
Le Roy said there are great challenges ahead for the international community and more work needs to be done to stabilize places like Haiti, Liberia along with ongoing operations in Afghanistan.
"We need to bolster, and in some instances mend, the global partnership that we need for a healthy and well-functioning United Nations peacekeeping system," Le Roy said in a statement.
"U.N. peacekeeping is effective only if all actors have a shared vision of what this instrument can and cannot achieve."
