WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Coalition airstrikes in support of Operation Inherent Resolve destroyed 283 Islamic State oil trucks near Al Hassakah Dayr As Zar, Syria.
The Nov. 22 strikes come as U.S. and coalition military forces continue to attack the Islamic State, Sunni militants also identified as Daesh and by the acronyms ISIS and ISIL, in both Iraq and Syria. The coalition attacking targets in Syria, known as the Combined Joint Task Force, combines forces from the United States, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, France, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.
The U.S. Department of Defense on Tuesday reported 9 strikes in Syria and 17 strikes in Iraq. Strikes in Syria were conducted using airborne fighters and remotely piloted aircraft. Strikes in Iraq were conducted with aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and rocket artillery in coordination with the Iraqi government.
The strikes targeted oil trucks as part of an effort to degrade the Islamic State's oil revenue, which defense officials say the terrorist organization uses to fund their activities.
