Indonesia orders air defense system from Thales UK

LONDON, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Indonesia's Ministry of Defense is acquiring an air defense system from Thales UK in a deal worth more than $164 million.

Thales said the order is for ForceShield, an integrated system that is comprised of STARStreak short-range missiles, ControlMaster 200 radar and weapon coordination systems, RAPIDRanger mobile weapons systems and lightweight multiple launchers.

"Thales is the only European defense contractor with the in-depth knowledge and range of advanced technologies to deliver a leading-edge integrated air defense solution such as ForceSHIELD," said Victor Chavez, chief executive officer of Thales UK. "This solution for the Indonesian Army marks a new approach to air defense in that it provides a complete turnkey solution comprising latest-generation 'sensor to effects' technologies."

Associated communications, training and support equipment are part of the contract, which will result in closer cooperation between Thales UK and Indonesian company PT LEN Industri, with which Thales partners with for military and civilian sector projects in Indonesia.
