ADCOR Defense aims at civilian market for its rifle

BALTIMORE, July 18 (UPI) -- ADCOR Defense is focusing on the U.S. commercial market for its advanced AR-15 rifle following cancellation of the U.S. Army's Individual Carbine Competition.

"Though we are disappointed that the Army chose to discontinue a competition that could have provided soldiers with significant improvements in accuracy and reliability, we accept this decision," said Jimmy Stavrakis, chairman and chief executive officer of the Maryland-based company.

"ADCOR will now focus on delivering the B.E.A.R. to the commercial market while continuing to provide options for the military's rifles of the future."

B.E.A.R. stands for Brown Enhanced Automatic Rifle. It features a one-of-a-kind gas piston system, a free-floating barrel for increased accuracy, an exclusive port dust wiper with cover, an ambidextrous forward placed charging handle, and an innovative key-locked, highly rigid rail system, the company said.

ADCOR's rifle last year had been selected by the Army to be among five weapons for second-stage testing in a program to replace the M4 carbine, but the program was recently dropped.
