Security radar excels in field tests

LEIDEN, Netherlands, June 13 (UPI) -- SPEXER 1000, a new security radar by Cassidian of Germany, has successfully completed large-scale field trials.

The testing, held in Africa and Southeast Asia, involved coastal, poor weather and difficult terrain scenarios and the system proved its suitability as an effective solution for stationary or mobile intelligence and surveillance to protect critical infrastructure, said EADS, parent company of Cassidian.

"SPEXER 1000 gives surveillance systems for at-risk industrial installations, ports or other wide-area facilities an extremely high-precision all-weather capability that is unachievable with conventional systems and cameras," said Elmar Compans, head of Cassidian's Sensors & Electronic Warfare unit.

SPEXER 1000 has a range of up to 11 miles and features a high update rate and high Doppler resolution. It can detect small and slow-moving objects such as unmanned aerial vehicles, people and small boats and vehicles.

It is also portable and can be deployed on a tripod or aboard a vehicle.
