Unmanned helicopter demos cargo delivery

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 13 (UPI) -- Precision, autonomous delivery and placement of cargo has been demonstrated by an unmanned helicopter as part of a U.S. military project.

MLB Co., a California provider of low-cost solutions and products for unmanned aerial vehicles, said the precision delivery and placement was accomplished by its V-Bat aircraft using a stereo vision system for detecting and tracking an object while the aircraft was hovering.

A newly developed control logic, which commanded the hover maneuvers, guided a robotic arm to accurately pick up and place the target object.

"This is an excellent example of the flexibility and capabilities a vertical takeoff and landing V-Bat can provide," said Stephen Morris, chief executive officer and founder of MLB. "The V-Bat is ideal for shipboard operations, aerial patrol, payload pick-up and delivery or any application that requires access to hard-to-reach or dangerous locations."

The demonstration was part of a program sponsored by the U.S. Defense Advanced Projects Agency.
