Covered under the order are 8,700 EZPRR man-worn systems and about 50 vehicle systems. Deliveries are to be completed by September 2013.

"The Enhanced Encrypted Personal Role Radio significantly enhances combat effectiveness by providing all informed communications to front-line soldiers," Selex Elsag said in announcing the contract.

"Users on active service have described the introduction of the original PRR as having a profound effect on the operational effectiveness of infantry. The EZPRR builds on that success, enhancing vital performance and, in turn, is now operationally proven."

The EZPRR uses advanced 2.4GHz spread spectrum technology, is modular in design and features a wireless press-to-talk capability that allows a soldier to operate the radio without removing his hands from his weapon.
