PARIS, July 13 (UPI) -- An operational dual mode Brimstone missile from MBDA has been successfully fired for the first time in Britain against a fast-moving maritime target.
"This latest firing was a great success for the team" said Paul Stanley, MBDA International Market Development director. "This additional capability builds upon the data gathered in March and demonstrates Brimstone's low collateral yet lethal effects against moving and maneuvering FIACs.
"It also significantly advances and confirms MBDA's ability to offer customers as of now an extremely effective, anti-swarming FIAC capability using our world leading, combat proven Brimstone missile in its mmW version."
FIACs stands for fast in-shore attack craft, such as patrol and attack boats.
Brimstone was originally developed by the France-based, multi-national MBDA as an airborne anti-tank and ground target weapon.
During the trial, a Tornado G4 of the Royal Air Force targeted a fast moving FIAC and sank it.
MBDA said five years of seeker and telemetry trials have proven Brimstone's ability to acquire and track the FIAC in both semi-active laser and millimetric wave radar guidance modes.
"This makes Brimstone the only currently available weapon capable of providing a fully effective solution against small, fast moving and maneuvering maritime targets," Stanley said.
