AmSafe introduces new anti-RPG product

PHOENIX, June 24 (UPI) -- AmSafe Inc. has announced a new line of lightweight textile armor to protect military vehicles from rocket-propelled grenades.

The system is called Tarian Xtreme. The company says the product, launched by its AmSafe Bridport business unit, can provide weight savings of up to 90 percent when compared to traditional steel bar or slat armor.

When compared to aluminum bar armor, weight savings are said to be as much as 75 percent, it said in a news release Wednesday.

"We continue to improve upon and expand the applications of the Tarian technology and in these products we have pushed the boundaries to create offerings with distinct operational and cost advantages over other types of RPG protection," Terry Lyons, chief executive officer of AmSafe, said Wednesday.

The new system has been tested by both the U.K. Ministry of Defense's Defense Science and Technology Laboratory and by its U.S. Defense Department counterpart.

Testing include more than 400 live-fire RPG shots, it said.

Along with the system, the company unveiled QuickSheild, an emergency replacement kit for damaged or missing bar armor on vehicles.

AmSafe is a leading producer textile safety and restraint products, including nets for palletized air cargo.
