Textron air bag demonstrates capabilities

WILMINGTON, Mass., May 27 (UPI) -- Textron Defense Systems marked a milestone for its armored vehicle air bag solution after completing tests from the U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Textron submitted its Tactical Rocket-Propelled Grenade Airbag Protection System for six weeks of Active Protection Systems Live Fire Test and Evaluation from the Office of the Secretary of Defense to assess the capabilities of the air bag solution.

Textron said its TRAPS technology was installed with a mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicle, a widely deployed platform used by the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan and evaluated in situations with live grenade threats in multiple scenarios similar to what the system would face in combat zones.

The TRAPS air bag system successfully completed the testing and Textron said in a release it demonstrated "exceptional performance."

"The system is compatible with multiple military vehicle types, and it delivers reliable, robust performance against different rocket-propelled grenade threats while minimizing costly, time-consuming modifications and vehicle recertification tests," Textron Systems Chief Technology Officer Thomas McNamara said in a statement.
