Ceradyne awarded phase I for radomes

COSTA MESA, Calif., Feb. 11 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has awarded a phase I contract to Ceradyne Inc. to develop a next-generation missile nosecone base on its silicon nitride technologies.

U.S. company Ceradyne, a technical ceramic solutions developer for the defense market, was awarded the contract from the Naval Air System Command in China Lake, Calif.

Under the $342,000 research phase I contract, Ceradyne will begin the development of a new ceramic missile radome based on the company's silicon nitride ceramic technology.

"We are very pleased to have received this research award in order to develop next-generation ceramic missile radome materials," Biljana Mikijelj, Ceradyne research and development director, said in a statement.

"Ceradyne's Scottdale, Georgia, plant is a dedicated state-of-the-art production ceramic radome facility producing not only the ceramic missile radome blank, but the high-precision diamond-machined finished component."
