The long-lead materials purchase contract, worth $17.6 million, is for the conversion of 15 of the Royal Saudi land forces' M1A2 Abrams tanks to M1A2S tanks. The contract follows a previous deal for General Dynamics to develop a hybrid-based upgrade modification for the Abrams vehicle.

According to a news release the hybrid M1A2S vehicles variant is designed to "increase lethality while limiting obsolescence."
