NATO and Eurofighter agree on weapons

HALLBERGMOOS, Germany, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- NATO and European company Eurofighter GmbH have reached an acceptance agreement on the Eurofighter Typhoon's new Tranche 2 weapon system.

The Block 8 Type Acceptance agreement between Eurofighter and the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency follows successful flight testing. Officials say with the agreement, deliveries of the Eurofighter aircraft can proceed.

"2008 is proving to be a decisive year for the program," Aloysius Rauen, Eurofighter chief executive officer, said in a statement.

"Block 8 Type Acceptance represents a further major landmark, achieved through strong industry-customer cooperation, and one that will maintain the delivery continuity of Eurofighter Typhoon to the air forces."

The Eurofighter Typhoon, used by air forces in five European countries and Saudi Arabia, is a next-generation fighter aircraft. The Typhoon's new Tranche 2 weapon system has an enhanced multirole man-machine interface and a full laser designator pod, among other advances.
