GD to support Afghan infrastructure

FAIRFAX, Va., Sept. 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has contracted General Dynamics Information Technology to support communications infrastructure in Afghanistan.

If all options are exercised, the contract could be worth $32 million over five years. Under the deal from the Army Corps of Engineers Afghanistan Engineer District, General Dynamics will provide support for satellite and network communications infrastructure projects in Afghanistan.

Officials say the satellite communication technology support by General Dynamics will provide the Army Corps of Engineers with video, voice and data communications throughout Afghanistan.

"The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Afghanistan Engineer District is leading pivotal construction and rebuilding efforts that are enhancing the lives of the Afghan people and providing a foundation for future growth and prosperity throughout the country," Zannie Smith, General Dynamics Information Technology representative, said in a statement.

"Afghanistan Engineer District's design and construction efforts require equally robust communications to coordinate an array of public and private organizations."
