Comtech contracted for satellite equipment

MELVILLE, N.Y., Oct. 3 (UPI) -- The U.S. Department of Defense announced it has contracted Arizona-based Comtech EF Data Corp. for satellite communications infrastructure equipment.

Under a $1.2 million order Comtech EF Data, a subsidiary of Comtech Telecommunications Corp., will support a new satellite-based communications network. Comtech EF Data is a manufacturer of satellite communications equipment for advanced communications.

The Comtech EF Data will install the company's turboIP-45 Performance Enhancement Proxy, designed to combat the inherent challenges of transmitting Transmission Control Protocol over satellite links, the SLM-5650 Satellite Modem and the Vipersat Management System.

Company officials say the turboIP-45 supports the Space Communications Protocol Standard Transport Protocol and is an effort to provide transparent acceleration of TCP sessions. The SLM-5650 Satellite Modem complies with the requirements of the Defense Satellite Communications System and is suited for government and military applications, including fixed, at-the-pause and on-the-move communications.

“This order is another demonstration of Comtech’s multifaceted ability to support the U.S. government’s communication requirements,” said Fred Kornberg, president and chief executive officer of Comtech Telecommunications, in a statement.
