Lebanon foils new terror plot

BEIRUT, Lebanon, June 7 (UPI) -- Lebanon scored a victory in its escalating battle with terrorists as authorities preempted a car bombing and found guns and ammunition.

As the army continues its heavy campaign against the Islamic militant Fatah al-Islam group in northern Lebanon, now well into its third week, the security authorities said Thursday they seized a booby-trapped car and two others laden with weapons and ammunition.

The official Lebanese news agency said authorities found the vehicles in Berr Elias town in the eastern Bekaa Valley after interrogating three suspects who were arrested Wednesday.

The three suspects -- two Syrians and an Iraqi -- reportedly confessed to the authorities about the booby-trapped car and plans to blow it up. The agency said the security and army forces cordoned off a building in the town and found the three vehicles without license plates.

Unconfirmed reports said the three suspects were affiliated with al-Qaida.
