Germans march against neo-Nazism

BERLIN, May 1 (UPI) -- Numerous Neo-Nazi demonstrations on May Day in Germany were sabotaged by counter-demonstrations, with some turning violent.

In Dortmund and Nuremberg, the German National Democratic Party, a far-right group, organized two rallies to demonstrate their strength, but the plan backfired when several thousand people decided to protest the right-wingers' marches.

In Dortmund, nearly 2,000 people marched parallel to a much smaller group of far-right extremists; yet it was some of the far-left demonstrators who hurled stones at police, who moved in to arrest some 60 of them.

In Nuremberg, some 200 neo-Nazis marched, while more than 5,000 people launched a rally dubbed "Nuremberg is colorful" to stand up against neo-Nazism. Some far-left radicals hurled stones and bottles toward Bavaria's interior minister, who was hit by one projectile.

In Berlin, May Day until the early evening remained largely peaceful; some 6,000 police were deployed all over the city to contain any violence.
