S. Koreans hold rallies over spy probe

SEOUL, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- South Korean anti-communists gathered in front of the country's National Intelligence Service building in Seoul Monday to call for a probe into spy allegations.

The activists also criticized the country's left-leaning Democratic Labor Party for protecting North Korean sympathizers and spies.

The National Intelligence Service has begun investigating a number of politicians from the labor party on suspicion of spying for the communist North and making unauthorized contacts with alleged North Korean agents.

At the rally in front of the NIS building, protestors called for disbanding the DLP, saying it has led to an increase in North Korea sympathizers and anti-U.S. rallies in the South.

Attendees burnt a North Korean national flag in protest. They also held a rally in front of the DLP building in Seoul.

The DLP held its own rally, criticizing the intelligence agency over the probe into the spy allegations.

Despite the protests, DLP leaders flew to Pyongyang that day to meet North Korean leaders over the nuclear crisis and inter-Korean ties.
