Syria passes intelligence to Hezbollah

MOSCOW, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- During the recent Israeli incursion into Lebanon Hezbollah received direct military intelligence reports from Syria, according to a report.

MOSNEWS, in a report based on a story by the Israeli paper Ha'artez, said on Oct. 3 that the data transferred by the Syrians was collected by listening posts jointly manned by Russian and Syrian crews.

Hezbollah also received intelligence from new listening posts built on the Syrian side of the contested Golan Heights.

Ha'aretz reported Oct. 3 that the new intelligence posts were operated jointly with Iran.

Syria has intelligence-sharing agreements with both Moscow and Tehran. The Syrian-Iranian intelligence agreement was signed earlier this year.

Syria is also one of Russia's largest arms markets. Russian technicians are helping Syria enlarge its Mediterranean ports of Latakia and Tartus.

The new intelligence cooperation agreement between Syria and Iran was initialed in November 2005 and confirmed during the visit to Damascus in January 2006 of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The agreement emphasizes electronic surveillance and provides for the construction of four listening stations.
