Thailand PM says he may step down

BANGKOK, March 15 (UPI) -- Thailand's embattled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Wednesday that he would entertain stepping down temporarily to calm the current political crisis.

Thaksin was reported as saying he was "open to considering every solution," when asked whether he would consider the move.

The premier told reporters he would make the "best decision when the time comes," while campaigning in northeastern Thailand for April 2 elections he has called to reaffirm his mandate.

An estimated 70,000 protesters amassed around his office in Bangkok Tuesday, demanding he resign over allegations of corruption.

Thaksin sold a company he founded tax-free to a Singapore-based interest, a move that has been called disloyal. For his part, the premier denies any wrongdoing.

Mass demonstrations have continued for days and remain peaceful, although many protesters say they will not give up until a resignation is tendered.

Former Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda told reporters he "would like to urge all parties and everyone concerned with the ongoing situation, who are mature and senior figures, to help untangle the situation."
