GD contract for Stryker unit changeovers

DETROIT, March 9 (UPI) -- General Dynamics received a $27 million contract modification for support services during the movement of U.S. Army Stryker units in and out of Iraq.

The company announced Wednesday that its Land Systems unit near Detroit would take part in close-out support for the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, which is deployed in Iraq, and the pre-deployment activities of the 2nd Infantry Division's 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team.

The work began earlier this month and will be completed in about a year. It is taking place in the United States, Canada, Kuwait and Germany.

The contract modification is an extension of an original Interim Contractor Logistics Support (ICLS) contract that was awarded in 2002. The modification has a potential value of $56 million, G.D. said in a news release.

Iraq is the first combat for the Stryker, which is earmarked for a major role in future Army operations. The eight-wheeled armored vehicle is the primary mode of transportation for mobile Army brigade combat teams.

The vehicles come in a variety of configurations for missions as varied as simple troop transport and the hauling of supplies to command-and-control and reconnoitering areas contaminated by chemical and biological weapons.
