Iran plays down possible U.S. strike

TUNIS, Tunisia, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- An Iranian official expressed confidence the United States will not attack his country for fear of defeat.

"U.S. threats do not intimidate Iran because America will not dare to attack Iran and is aware that Iran is not like Iraq or Afghanistan," said Waheed Ahmadi, head of tje cultural affairs department at the foreign ministry, was quoted by Tunisian daily al-Shourouq as saying Tuesday. "That is why U.S. threats are not effective, and if Washington carried out its threats against Iran it will lose and be harmed more than we will."

Washington is seeking to refer Iran's nuclear case to the U.N. Security Council for possible sanctions after Tehran broke U.N. seals on nuclear fuel research centers last week, sparking Western condemnations.

"The West fears that Iran could become a model and example of development for the rest of Islamic countries," Ahmadi said.
