U.S. expands Zimbabwe sanctions list

WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- President Bush applied targeted sanctions Thursday against more persons and entities it says help undermine democracy in Zimbabwe.

The White House said the order was signed on Tuesday, expanding the previous list of 77 persons by another 128 persons and 33 entities.

"There is still time for the Government of Zimbabwe to avoid a further expansion of the sanctions list should it begin serious efforts to restore democratic norms and the rule of law," it said.

"This action is not aimed at the people of Zimbabwe, but rather at those most responsible for their plight. The failed political and economic policies of the Robert Mugabe regime have succeeded in devastating Zimbabwe."

The order not only blocks assets in the United States of the individuals and their families, and also prevents those named from traveling to the country.
