Arafat's widow wants his death probed

TRIPOLI, Libya, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- The widow of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat called for an international inquiry into her husband's death last year.

Suha Arafat was quoted by the official Libyan News Agency, JANA, as saying Thursday she "supported and backed" Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's initial request for the investigation following allegations he might have been poisoned.

"The widow of Yasser Arafat expressed gratitude for Gadhafi's gesture and said she was touched by his humanitarian move and his keenness to know the truth about Arafat's death," JANA reported.

Gadhafi called last October for an international investigation into Arafat's death, writing to Arab summit head Algerian President Abdel Aziz Boutefliqa and to Arab League Secretary General Amr Mousa, urging them to make necessary efforts to set up an investigating committee.

Arafat died Nov. 11 last year in a Paris hospital where he was rushed two weeks earlier after a sudden deterioration in his health.

Since there was no definitive cause of death released, there was much speculation in the Arab world that he was poisoned.
