Iran blasts American president

TEHRAN, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Iran Sunday blasted President George W. Bush for his criticism of the Islamic Republic, saying Bush was seeking a "confrontation with the Muslim world."

The official Islamic Republic News Agency quoted foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi as saying the American president's statements were not in the best interests of his country.

Asefi was responding to a speech Bush gave on Friday, in which he described the Iranian regime as "illegitimate" and accused it of harboring terrorists.

The spokesman said he regretted the "American people have such a president."
