Thai worries about terrorism after Bali

BANGKOK, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has warned that violence from the Bali bombings may spill over to tourist spots in Thailand.

The Bangkok Post reported that Thaksin included the tourist resort of Phuket in his survey of vulnerable sites where "certain indications" are prompting the Thai government to undertake additional precautions.

Thaksin said, "We're on full alert but there's something which forces us to put up our guard."

He did not elaborate.

Thaksin noted the proximity of Bali to Thailand and said many people traveled back and forth between Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, increasing the potential for violence. Thaksin said that additional plainclothes security forces had been deployed in many popular tourist areas, particularly Phuket and Phangnga, while Special Branch Police commissioner Thavorn Chanyim said security had been increased at foreign missions and tourist magnets such as Khao San road in Bangkok.

Thavorn said that while there was no current indication of a possible terrorist strike on Thailand authorities were nevertheless intensifying security precautions.
