Palestinian group's leader shot in Lebanon

SIDON, Lebanon, May 17 (UPI) -- Abdallah Shreidi, the leader of a Palestinian fundamentalist group who was wanted by the Lebanese authorities, was wounded during an ambush Saturday at a refugee camp in southern Lebanon.

His uncle, Yehya Shreidi, was killed in the attack, while a bodyguard was wounded.

The unidentified gunmen opened fire from a speeding car in the Ein el-Helweh camp, located on the outskirts of the port city of Sidon, security sources said.

Shreidi, who established the Isbat al-Nour group after breaking away from the Isbat al-Ansar group, was severely wounded and was in serious condition. He was wanted by Lebanese authorities for alleged involvement in several crimes. Isbat al-Ansar was on a U.S. list of terrorist organizations.

The ambush took place shortly after the men gave condolences for the killing of Ibrahim Shreidi, a relative and a former bodyguard of a Fatah official, who was previously shot dead inside the camp.

Ein-el-Helweh, the largest shantytown in southern Lebanon with some 65,000 refugees, has been the scene of near-daily bombings and assassinations for months.
