Brazil blasted on human rights

SAO PAULO, July 10 (UPI) -- A leading opposition congressman slammed Brazil's leadership Wednesday for not acting on alleged human rights abuses at the hands of federal authorities in Espirito Santo state. Critics of President Fernando Henrique Cardoso say he is attempting to avoid the inevitable onslaught of bad publicity a wide-scale investigation into human rights abuses would bring.
