Kyrgyz economist dies from a hunger strike

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Sheraly Nazarkulov, 51, a prominent economist who had been on a hunger strike for 21 days to protest the arrest of a member of Parliament, died Thursday at a hospital in the capital city of Bishkek, the local independent Internet newspaper of Gazeta.Kg reported. Nazarkulov had used the hunger strike to demand the release of Deputy Azimbek Beknazarov, who was arrested after criticizing the government and President Askar Akayev for ceding Kyrgyz territories to China.
