Man seized for burning church

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Lebanese security forces on Monday arrested a man on charges of setting fire to a church in northern Lebanon in one of a series of recent incidents in which mosques and churches have been targeted.

A statement by State Security said the man confessed to "burning the entrance of the church;" it said he was still being interrogated.

Last week, a small explosion damaged the entrance of another church in Sidon in south Lebanon, and a few days later, a mosque was burned in the northern town of Batroun.

No one was hurt in those incidents, which were condemned by Muslim and Christian religious leaders as well as President Emile Lahoud who accused Israel of being behind the attacks.

The attacks began after the U.S. launched strikes on Oct. 7 against Afghanistan as part of its war on terrorism.
