Spanish renewable energy companies interested in Turkey

ISTANBUL, Turkey, May 28 (UPI) -- The Spanish Wind Energy Association is interested in investing in the wind energy market in Turkey.

During a visit to a conference in Istanbul, Spanish Wind Energy Association Technical Director Alberto Cena said, "Spain is very experienced in wind energy and Spanish companies want to invest in other countries."

Cena wanted to inform Turkish executives that wind energy investment costs were lower than they thought, Hurriyet reported Friday.

Cena drew analogies between Spain and Turkey in regards to their energy needs and said, "Therefore, the two countries must think of using natural energy opportunities like wind energy" and added that Turkey could be a gateway for Spanish renewable energy companies broaden their business into other international markets.

After the United States, Germany and China, Spain has risen to become the world's fourth biggest producer of wind power, generating 20,000 megawatts -- 14 percent of the country's electrical demand -- for the Spanish national power grid.

Spain's largest producer of electricity from wind power is Iberdrola, which provides 25.5 percent of the nation's capacity.
