Oil industry heads say knowledge is power

WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Education is the new top priority for Red Cavaney and the American Petroleum Institute.

At a news conference Tuesday, Caveney, president of API, announced his organization will be driving a campaign to educate consumers and policymakers about the oil and gas industries.

"Very little was understood and a lot of concerns that they expressed to law makers and regulators wouldn't address the problem they were trying to address," he said.

He said the more knowledge people were, the more aligned their feelings were with industry officials'.

"What makes the industry tick, the role capital plays," are what Caveney said will be the focus of the educational advocacy.

There is not a "price tag" on the program he said, but progress will be monitored over the course of several years.

The hope, Cavaney said, is to break down barriers in the public policy arena and tackle issues that haven't been at the forefront of debate recently.

Globally, Caveney and his colleagues want to see inclusion of rapidly developing nations like China and India in technology information sharing programs. Caveney touted the success so far of the Asia-Pacific Partnership in making nuclear and natural gas plants more efficient and looked to clean coal burning as the next success.
