American Airlines plans more layoffs

FORT WORTH, Texas, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- American Airlines officials say they are planning more layoffs as the airline struggles with higher fuel prices and intense competition.

Gerard Arpey, American's chief executive, revealed the next round of job cuts in a conference with analysts Tuesday at the airline's headquarters, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

"We will see more cuts across the board, involving all workers, in the months ahead," he said.

The cuts will come on top of 1,100 layoffs of pilots and mechanics announced earlier. Executives would not disclose how many jobs would be cut in the next round of layoffs.

American has cut more than 20,000 jobs since 2001 amid an industry downturn and competition from low-cost airlines, but the airline continues to lose money. Last month, the airline posted a $214 million loss for the third quarter.

Despite the cutbacks and $1.6 billion in concessions from unionized employees last year American still needs to reduce costs, officials said.
