SEOUL, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp. and Samsung Electronics, the world's largest computer memory chipmaker, formed a strategic alliance Wednesday to develop personal computers and digital home network business.

Microsoft founder and chairman Bill Gates and Chin Dae-je, president and chief executive officer of Samsung Electronics' digital media business, signed a memorandum of understanding over the deal which both sides said paved the way for joint marketing and development of digital electronics products.

It was the first strategic alliance for Microsoft's eHome Division, a business unit formed this year to develop technologies that offer whole-home entertainment, communications and control experiences to everyday consumers.

"The two companies intend to work together to develop and market a new breed of products based on Samsung hardware and Microsoft Windows software," Gates said in a statement. The alliance will deliver "a new generation of digital home technologies that create exciting experiences without adding more complexity to people's lives," Gates said.

Chin said Samsung was seeking to pioneer a new range of home technologies with Microsoft, including personal computers, digital devices, intelligent home appliances and services.

Samsung, South Korea's biggest business conglomerate, on Tuesday agreed with Hewlett-Packard Co. to cooperate in developing mobile solutions technology.
