U.S. Geological Survey reports 6.9 magnitude earthquake in China

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 6.9 earthquake struck the Xinjiang region in western China on Wednesday, with no immediate reports of injuries or damages.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- A 6.9 magnitude earthquake shook Xinjiang in the western region of China on Wednesday.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the "earthquake most likely resulted from movement along the Altyn Tagh fault system or an adjacent structure. In 2008, a M 7.2 earthquake occurred approximately 120 km further west-southwest of the February 12, 2014 event. The 2008 earthquake resulted in moderate damage to buildings in the region."

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damages caused by the earthquake.
