NEW YORK, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Emilia Clarke said she landed her role as Daenerys Targaryen, the so-called Mother of Dragons, on "Game of Thrones" by dancing the funky chicken during her audition.

On a joking dare from "Game of Thrones" showrunner and co-creator David Benioff, Clarke said she showed off some of her dancing skills during her audition.

"I did the robot, followed by the funky chicken," she told the Wall Street Journal. "I think it sealed the deal."

Benioff said Clarke had won the part in the HBO fantasy series before she had even busted out her dance moves.

"We needed an actress who could convincingly embody both the timid, voiceless Dany we first meet, and the Mother of Dragons she later becomes," he said. "Some of the young women could do fearful but not fearsome—one or two could do the reverse. Only Emilia nailed both."

"Game of Thrones" returns to the small screen 9 p.m. April 6.
