LOS ANGELES, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Macklemore feels really bad about winning four Grammy Awards, including one for Best Rap Album, while critically acclaimed newcomer Kendrick Lamar went home empty-handed.

The 30-year-old rapper and Seattle native -- and plenty of fans -- thought Lamar's debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, deserved at least one award.

So Macklemore decided to text Lamar an apology -- and then tell everyone about it.

"My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album," Macklemore captioned an Instagram image of the text.

I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that’s taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it’s proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You’re the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That’s what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys

Macklemore expressed his trepidation about a possible win against Lamar earlier this month, when he was named The Source's Man of the Year.

"We're up against Kendrick [Lamar], who made a phenomenal album. If we win a Grammy for Best Rap Album, hip-hop is going to be heated," Macklemore said at the time.
