CAIRO, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A senior official in Egypt's Ministry of Interior was killed Tuesday in Cairo.

Saeed was the head of the Ministry of Interior's technical department and a senior aide to Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim. The Ministry of Interior has led a crackdown on Islamists in recent months that has resulted in clashes with Islamists and their supporters and attacks by militants. Saeed may have been targeted for his leadership at the ministry.

An assassination attempt against the interior minister in September failed.
