French first lady remains hospitalized after president's affair revealed

French first lady Valerie Trierweiler remains hospitalized following allegations on Friday by a French tabloid that her long-time partner, President François Hollande was engaged in an affair with actress Julie Gayet.

Trierweiler's aide, Patrice Biancone, says "She needed rest. We are hoping that she will leave the hospital at the beginning of this week." The first lady checked herself into a hospital upon publication of the alleged affair.

Trierweiler and Hollande are not married, though she has accompanied the president to official state appearances since Hollande left his common-law wife Segolene Royal prior to the 2012 presidential elections. Hollande has not denied his affair with Gayet although he has threatened legal action.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Hollande refused to answer questions about his personal life, saying it was "neither the time nor the place." He did, however, say that he would clarify whether Trierweiler was still the first lady of France before his planned February 11 trip to Washington, D.C.
